Abstract Introduction and Objectives Repeated internal audits suggested 20% of patients booked into the emergency general surgery theatre list failed to achieve their allotted time theatre. We wished investigate this further, identify potential reasons whether any delay resulted in patient harm. Materials Methods retrospectively reviewed 748 consecutive adult over a 12 month period for appendicectomy, hernia repair, laparoscopic cholecystectomy or abscess I+D. excluded laparotomies under 18yoa. recorded pre-operative CEPOD classification, adherence timeframe delays. Outcome measures included post-op length stay (POLOS), prolonged hospital stay, unexpected intraoperative findings. Results Of procedures, 632 (85%) achieved desired frame 116 (15%) were delayed. delayed cases, 94 (81%) appropriately (clinical review). Most delays caused by higher priority but one third no reason was recorded. There difference mean POLOS findings between two groups those achieving expected Conclusions Despite our initial concerns regarding only occurred 15% study group with discernible outcomes as measured. The repeated clinical review potentially accessing operating appears be safe. Improved documentation accurate bookings across all surgical teams will aid running assessing provision.
